Maternity Photos: Loving Your Body
Admittedly, I am a terrible sleeper, but generally it’s falling asleep/ morning. I hardly ever wake up mid-sleep. But the other night I woke up at around five in the morning, having just had a dream about my friend having a baby. In my dream, I was in the room and trying to calm her partner down, and the baby was rushing into this world! Awake, I turned my phone off airplane mode and three seconds later: a text with a photo of my beautiful friend and her new baby! I was there with her in dream! I shot maternity photos with this beautiful mother to be whom I have known for many years. In fact, I used to be her residence assistant in university!
Two thoughts came to mind when shooting the maternity photos:
- You never know where life will bring you
- Pregnancy is a very natural and lovely state for many women
Taking the photos made me really see how beautiful a woman can be when they become well, a woman. Light hugs the pregnant tummy’s curves and hands seem more delicate when resting on a baby bump. There is something very serene about the state of growing a human. Yes, there are the swollen ankles and other weird bodily stuff, but at the end of the day, it’s pretty amazing.
I like to joke that women should be able to put, front and centre at the top of their resume: capacity to grow a human! 🙂
I am so grateful to live in a time when we, more and more, embrace women’s bodies; when women can feel confident and glamorous as an expecting mother. I also feel privileged to be able to capture these moments as a photographer.
In addition to the mommy maternity photo shoot, her partner who we dragged to the outdoor shoot (in the snowy cold, who can blame him) did amazing. Seeing a partner as supporting and considerate as him, but also with a great sense of humour makes taking photos in the cold a really lovely experience.
Congratulations to the couple and their new baby girl! She came into this world at a healthy 8lbs+.
